Unfortunately, you cannot reduce the size of a virtual disk that easy. It's not only the disk size which needs to be reduced in such a case, but also the guest OS partition(s). To reduce the disk sizes you may use VMware Converter and switch to Volume based conversion, which allows to select the target disk size.
